What are fire-rated glass and doors?
Fire-rated glass and door systems are tested assemblies designed to resist flame, smoke and heat for a defined period — commonly 20 to 120 minutes, and up to 180 minutes for some fire-protective products, subject to area and size restrictions. They maintain integrity at extreme temperatures, which is what protects escape routes during an evacuation.
Two performance types
Fire-protective products block smoke and flame. Fire-resistive products additionally reduce heat transfer through the glazed element. They are not interchangeable, and specifying the wrong one is the single most common error in fire-rated glazing.
Why they suit every project type
The systems are specified across schools, hospitals, offices, retail, high-rises, hotels, factories and residential properties. What changes between them is the required rating and the position in the fire strategy, not the principle.
Key benefits for designers and owners
- Life-safety performance on protected escape routes
- Compatibility across sectors and building types
- Multiple rating options, commonly 20 to 120 minutes and up to 180 minutes for some products
- Energy efficiency, acoustic and security capability alongside the fire rating
- Durability appropriate to commercial traffic
Compliance and specification
Fire-rated components must be tested together as complete units. Glass, frame, seals, hardware and fixings form one certified assembly — a rated pane in an untested frame is not a rated assembly and will not certify.
Benefits in commercial buildings
- Life safety and evacuation. Escape routes stay usable for the rated period.
- Property and business protection. Compartmentation limits fire spread and the damage that follows.
- Code compliance and insurance. Certified assemblies satisfy the authority having jurisdiction and the insurer.
- Design, comfort and functionality. Transparency retained across lines that would otherwise be solid.
- Operational reliability. Robust engineering that performs over the life of the building.
