Choosing

Which product answers which question

  • I need privacy on demand

Smart window film for glass already installed; smart glass where the glazing is being supplied new.
  • I need to control heat and glare

Electrochromic film where the tint should be switched; photochromic film where it should respond automatically.
  • I need to satisfy the fire strategy

Fire rated glass, specified as a complete tested assembly rather than as a pane.
  • I want the envelope to generate

Solar smart glass and transparent BIPV solar glass, integrated into the facade rather than mounted on it.
  • I am retrofitting occupied space

Applied film routes — no re-glazing, non-destructive, and removable at the end of a lease.
  • I have a non-standard opening

Non-rectangular formats and bespoke sizes are produced to drawing.

FAQ

Product questions

Comparisons, make-ups and the practical limits of each family.

Can smart window film be fitted to glass that is already installed?
Yes. That is its main advantage over laminated switchable glass. The film is bonded to the inner face of the existing pane, so occupied space can be upgraded without replacing the glazing.
What is the largest single piece available?
1.5 m × 2.7 m. Larger openings are covered by dividing the elevation into multiple panes, with the joint line normally set out to align with the mullion grid.
Does the film work on curved or shaped glass?
Non-rectangular formats are produced to drawing. Send us the setting-out and we will confirm what is achievable for the specific geometry.
What happens in a power cut?
The film reverts to its unpowered state, which is opaque. Privacy is the default and transparency is the powered condition.
What is the difference between smart glass and smart film?
The technology is the same. In smart glass the PDLC layer is laminated inside a glass panel at manufacture; smart film is applied to glass that is already installed. New build and new partitions usually take glass; occupied and leased space usually takes film.
Which glass thickness should be specified?
It depends on the pane size, whether the panel is a partition or a door leaf, and the structural and acoustic requirement. Send the elevation and we will advise on the make-up.
Can the glass be used as a projection screen?
Yes. In its opaque state the panel functions as a rear-projection surface, which is why it is often specified in meeting rooms that need both privacy and presentation.
Is smart glass suitable for external glazing?
It is used in both interior and exterior applications. External use needs the unit designed for the exposure, so confirm the build-up with our technical team.
