Overview

Smart Window Film is a self-adhesive, electro-optical liquid-crystal film applied directly to an existing glass surface. Apply voltage and the crystals align, so the film is transparent. Remove voltage and they scatter light, so the surface is opaque and private. Nothing moves, nothing is stored, and the wall of glass you already have does the work of a blind, a curtain and a projection screen.

Because it is applied rather than glazed in, the film is the practical route for occupied buildings: fit-outs where the partitions are already in place, leased space where the glazing cannot be replaced, and refurbishments working to a live programme.

Benefits

The reasons clients give, rather than the reasons a datasheet gives. Each one is drawn from how the product is actually used on projects.

  • Aesthetic and functional in one surface

A single glazed plane replaces the blind, the curtain and the projection screen.

  • Versatile across settings

Specified for hotels, hospitals, offices, residential interiors and the yacht and marine sector.

  • Made to your dimensions

Cut to customer-specified sizes and produced in non-rectangular formats.

  • Applied and removed cleanly

Installation is non-destructive to the glass and the film can be taken off at the end of a lease or a fit-out cycle.

  • Energy-conscious

UV-resistant, and daylight can be admitted without giving up privacy — so artificial lighting and solar load both fall.

  • Modern design, lower material load

No fabric, no slats, no motor housings, and nothing that needs laundering or replacing on a cycle.

Features

The working principle, from the glass surface to the switch position.

  • Applied to the glass

The film is bonded to the clean inner face of the existing pane. Copper busbars along the edge carry the supply, and the cabling is routed into the frame or channel.

  • Powered to clear

With voltage applied, the dispersed liquid crystals align along the field and light passes through the film — the pane reads as clear glazing.

  • Unpowered to private

With the supply interrupted, the crystals return to a random orientation and scatter light. The pane becomes a uniform translucent white and the view is obscured.

  • Switched how you want it

Wall switch, remote, timer, occupancy sensor or an integration into the building management or home automation system — the film only asks for a switched supply.

Applications

Where this film is most often specified.

  • Meeting-room and boardroom glazing

  • Consulting rooms and treatment bays

  • Reception and lobby screens

  • Residential bathrooms and en-suites

  • Retail display cases and window graphics

  • Yacht and marine interiors

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. That is its main advantage over laminated switchable glass. The film is bonded to the inner face of the existing pane, so occupied space can be upgraded without replacing the glazing.

1.5 m × 2.7 m. Larger openings are covered by dividing the elevation into multiple panes, with the joint line normally set out to align with the mullion grid.

Non-rectangular formats are produced to drawing. Send us the setting-out and we will confirm what is achievable for the specific geometry.

The film reverts to its unpowered state, which is opaque. Privacy is the default and transparency is the powered condition.
