Overview

Smart glass — also called switchable or privacy glass — carries a Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) film laminated between the plies at manufacture. Deactivated it is opaque; activated it becomes transparent instantly, giving effective privacy on demand and doubling as a rear-projection screen.

Because the switchable layer is inside the laminate, the finished panel behaves like any other architectural safety glass: it is handled, glazed and cleaned conventionally, and it carries the acoustic and safety benefits of lamination.

Benefits

The reasons clients give, rather than the reasons a datasheet gives.

  • Instant, complete privacy

Switching is immediate; there is no wait and no moving part.

  • Safety laminated

The panel is a laminated assembly, so it carries the retention behaviour expected of architectural safety glass.

  • Doubles as a projection surface

In the opaque state the panel works as a rear-projection screen for presentation space.

  • Sizes and glass types to suit

Float, tempered, ultra-white or tinted glass in 5, 6, 8 or 10 mm.

  • Interior and exterior applications

Specified for internal partitions and for external glazed units.

  • Fits residential and commercial detailing

Installed across building types in a range of sizes and shapes.

Features

The working principle, from make-up to switching.

  • Specify the make-up

Choose the glass thickness and type for the application, and whether the panel needs to be pre-glazed or supplied loose for site glazing.

  • Laminate the switchable layer

The PDLC film is laminated between the glass plies, so the active layer is sealed inside the panel and protected from handling, cleaning and moisture.

  • Wire and install

Pre-wired units arrive ready for connection. Cabling is concealed in the frame, the channel or the door rail depending on the detail.

  • Switch and control

Panel switch, remote, timer or BMS integration. Zones can be switched together or individually across a run of glazing.

Applications

Where this product is most often specified.

  • Boardroom and meeting-room walls

  • Executive office fronts

  • Hospital and clinic partitions

  • Hotel bathroom walls and villa en-suites

  • Retail display and window systems

  • External glazed units and skylights

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The technology is the same. In smart glass the PDLC layer is laminated inside a glass panel at manufacture; smart film is applied to glass that is already installed. New build and new partitions usually take glass; occupied and leased space usually takes film.

It depends on the pane size, whether the panel is a partition or a door leaf, and the structural and acoustic requirement. Send the elevation and we will advise on the make-up.

Yes. In its opaque state the panel functions as a rear-projection surface, which is why it is often specified in meeting rooms that need both privacy and presentation.

It is used in both interior and exterior applications. External use needs the unit designed for the exposure, so confirm the build-up with our technical team.
