Switchable
Smart Glass
Laminated switchable glass with the PDLC layer built into the make-up — specified into partitions, doors, windows and…
Partitions define how a floor plate works. Switchable glass lets that definition change during the day instead of being fixed at handover.
Partitions and screens shape the functionality and aesthetics of an interior. They define separate areas while keeping the space open, and they are made from glass, wood, metal and fabric depending on what the room is asked to do.
The difficulty is that a floor plate is asked to do several contradictory things. It has to feel open, and it has to contain a confidential conversation. It has to carry daylight to the core, and it has to give someone a room with a door. A solid partition answers one half and forfeits the other. A glass partition answers the other half and forfeits privacy.
Switchable Smart Glass Partitions integrate the switchable layer directly into the partition. With the touch of a button the glazing transforms from transparent to opaque, so the same wall is an open sightline for most of the day and a closed room when the meeting needs it to be.
Two routes are available: retrofit switchable film applied to partitions already installed, and laminated switchable glass supplied as the partition glazing. The laminated route also performs well on sound insulation, which is usually the second complaint after privacy.
The partition is clear for most of the day, so borrowed light still reaches the core.
Suited to offices where sensitive discussions happen in rooms with glass walls.
Laminated switchable glass performs on acoustic separation as well as visual.
Film for partitions already installed; laminated glass for new partitions.
Specified for retail environments and for homes, not only commercial floor plates.
The room configuration is not fixed at handover by a decision made in design.
Which lines need to be permanent, which need to change during the day, and where the daylight has to reach.
Existing partitions in occupied space take retrofit film. New partitions take laminated switchable glass, which also brings the acoustic benefit of lamination.
Zone the runs — a boardroom wall usually switches as one, a row of offices usually switches individually. Cabling is set out through the frame or the channel.
Panels are installed, wired and commissioned, and the switching is set up the way the occupants will actually use it.
