Fire Rated Glass

Two different jobs, two different products

Glazing that satisfies the fire strategy without closing the building down — tested assemblies that hold their line while the space stays open and bright.

Overview

Fire rated glass — also called fire resistant glass — is a specialised glazing type designed to perform under a formal Fire Resistance Test. It is the element that lets a compartment line run through a glazed wall instead of a solid one, which is why it turns up wherever a fire strategy meets an architectural intention to keep the space open.

The critical distinction is between glass that stops flame and smoke, and glass that also stops heat. They are different products with different ratings, and specifying the wrong one is the most common error we see.

Benefits

The reasons clients give, rather than the reasons a datasheet gives.

  • Life safety

Protected escape routes and compartment lines that hold long enough for occupants to leave.

  • Property protection

Compartmentation limits the spread of fire and the damage that follows it.

  • Regulatory compliance

Tested, certified assemblies that satisfy the authority having jurisdiction.

  • Design flexibility

Daylight, sightlines and openness retained across a line that would otherwise be solid.

  • Enhanced building performance

Fire-rated assemblies frequently carry acoustic and security benefits alongside the fire rating.

  • Durability

Robust glazed assemblies engineered for the traffic of a commercial building.

Features

The two product families, and what actually carries the rating.

  • Fire-protective glass

Resists the spread of flame and smoke. Products include wired glass, glass ceramics and specified tempered glass, typically rated from 20 to 180 minutes, with area and size restrictions that apply to the assembly.

  • Fire-resistive glass

Multi-laminate products that additionally limit heat transfer through the glazed element, meeting IBC requirements including temperature-rise limits and hose stream test compliance.

  • The assembly is what is rated

Glass, frame, seals, hardware and fixings are tested together. A rated pane in an untested frame is not a rated assembly, and it will not certify.

  • Specification and compliance

The required rating comes from the fire strategy and the applicable code. We work from that document rather than from a preferred product.

Applications

Where these assemblies are most often specified.

  • Protected escape routes and stair enclosures

  • Lobby and corridor compartment lines

  • Fire-rated door assemblies

  • Atrium edges and glazed compartment walls

  • Schools, hospitals and public buildings

  • High-rise and mixed-use towers

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Fire-protective glass resists the spread of flame and smoke. Fire-resistive glass also limits heat transfer through the glazed element, which is what allows it to be used in larger areas and in positions where radiant heat is a concern.

No. Fire performance is a property of the tested assembly — glass, frame, seals and hardware together. Components must be certified as a system.

Fire-protective products are typically rated from 20 to 180 minutes, with area and size limits applying to the assembly. The required rating comes from the project's fire strategy.

Modern fire-rated products are specified precisely because they do not force a visual compromise. The intention is that the compartment line reads as glazing.
