Transparent BIPV Solar Glass

Where the envelope and the energy system stop being separate

Building-integrated photovoltaics that are the building. Not panels added to a roof — glazing that generates from the surface it was always going to occupy.

Customisable double-glazed photovoltaic modules
  • The element is the array No separate roof area required.
  • Customisable modules Sizes, thicknesses, shapes and colours to the elevation.
  • Whole-system delivery Sourcing, distribution and integration handled together.

Overview

Transparent BIPV solar glass merges the building material and the generation asset. The glazing that encloses the building is also what produces from it, which removes the usual argument between an architect protecting an elevation and an engineer looking for array area.

TouchActiv supplies a range of BIPV products with customisable double-glazed modules in a variety of sizes, thicknesses, shapes and colours, and handles sourcing, distribution and system integration.

Benefits

The reasons clients give, rather than the reasons a datasheet gives.

  • Sustainable energy from the envelope

Solar generation integrated into the building materials rather than added to them.

  • Architectural freedom

Redefines what the elevation can do, with customisable sizes, thicknesses, shapes and colours.

  • No moving parts

Nothing to service mechanically, and no fuel input.

  • Minimal maintenance

Maintained essentially as glazing is maintained.

  • Long-term cost position

Durability and generation together change the whole-life cost of the elevation.

  • Supports sustainability targets

Contributes to the project's environmental performance case and green building ambitions.

Features

From module design to generation in service.

  • Module design

Double-glazed photovoltaic modules are configured to the elevation — size, thickness, shape and colour selected against the architectural intent.

  • Integration into the element

The modules are built into atria, facades, walls, awnings, pergolas, roofs, skylights and cladding as the glazed element itself.

  • Generation in service

The technology generates clean electricity while requiring no fuel, featuring no moving components and demanding minimal maintenance.

  • Whole-system delivery

Sourcing, distribution and system integration are handled together, so the glazing and the electrical integration are not two separate procurements that meet on site.

Applications

Where this glazing is most often specified.

  • Commercial facades and curtain walls

  • Atria and glazed roofs

  • Skylights and rooflights

  • Awnings, pergolas and canopies

  • Cladding and spandrel zones

  • Institutional and civic buildings

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Conventional panels are mounted onto a building. BIPV glazing is the building element — the facade, roof, skylight or canopy is what generates, so no separate array area is required.

The modules are customisable in size, thickness, shape and colour, which is usually what makes BIPV acceptable on a designed elevation.

There is no fuel input and there are no moving components, so maintenance demand is minimal and largely aligns with normal facade cleaning and inspection.

TouchActiv covers sourcing, distribution and system integration for the BIPV package, and coordinates with the project's electrical designer.
